EIA VISION

EIA seeks to expand educational opportunities and improve educational achievement for learners of all ages by infusing American education with market-based drivers of service, innovation, and results.

EIA MISSION

EIA’s mission is to promote increased public support for the education industry in order to improve educational opportunities and outcomes for all students.

EIA STRATEGIC GOALS

EIA works to foster the development of a vibrant preK-16 education industry by:

  • Enhancing accountability and quality throughout the industry by promoting industry standards, professional development and networking opportunities.
  • Promoting public policies that ensure equitable and fair access to the education marketplace.
  • Educating the public about the contributions of the education industry for improved service, results, and innovation.
  • Documenting and disseminating program outcomes and best practices.

WHO WE ARE

EIA is the leading umbrella professional association representing more than 600 rapidly growing and multi-faceted companies serving the pre K-16 education industry.

Founded in 1990, EIA is the premier professional association for private providers of education services and suppliers/developers of educational content. EIA is the industry’s collective voice, and represents all education sectors, from early childhood through post-secondary education.

  • The Association provides the framework for individual education entrepreneurs and corporate executives, together with public school leaders, to work together to promote effective models for transforming teaching and learning.
  • EIA represents the collective strengths and contributions of the multi-faceted education industry—an organization that projects a reasoned and positive voice for innovators in the supply of academic services and products.
  • Because our focus is ultimately on expanding opportunity and performance, we seek mutually respectful relationships with coalitions representing parents, school administrators/boards, and teachers, who all seek to improve educational outcomes in PreK-12 education. We also work on behalf of post secondary education providers, and their representatives, to help them expand options for adults seeking advanced degrees.
  • The education industry is poised for explosive growth in all of its segments from preK-12 through post-secondary education. In fact, education is rapidly becoming a $1 trillion industry, second in size only to the health care industry, and represents 10 percent of America’s GNP. Federal and state expenditures on education exceed $750 billion.

WHAT WE STAND FOR

EIA works to expand educational opportunities and improve educational achievement for learners of all ages through the values of public/private partnerships, innovation and accountability.

We promote public policies consistent with market-based reform. EIA works to ensure that our members who are Supplemental Education Service (SES) providers under NCLB have fair and equitable access to serving eligible students.

We embrace public/private partnerships that advance effective teaching and learning. EIA sponsors forums like Education Industry Day, to inform our members of the benefits of working through and with public education institutions.

  • We seek to improve educational outcomes in preK-12 education by partnering with parents, schools and community organizations. EIA sponsors professional development and networking opportunities that raise the raise of our members’ services.
  • We also work on behalf of post-secondary education providers to help them expand options for adults seeking advanced degrees. EIA supports changes in the HEA to expand opportunities for Title IV-eligible students to learn “at a distance,” and to add provisions for greater accountability.

National Down Syndrome Congress
National Down Syndrome Congress

Something special happened about a generation or two ago.

We made a radical shift, from isolating people with disabilities to bringing them into our communities. Suddenly, people who had been excluded, invisible, became part of daily life. Some strode as adults from the abyss of large group homes into community settings. Others made more mundane entries – they were born to families whose intent was – simply – to love them.

All – the adults with disabilities, the newborn and families – became pioneers, confronting a wilderness of obstacles, prejudice, misconception and myth.

We have come leagues since. Our sons and daughters with Down syndrome are now an integral part of daily life. They attend our schools, participate in their communities, hold jobs, pay taxes, vote. They bowl, play softball, go to football games. Some live with their families or in small group homes. And, increasingly, others live independently. Importantly, they contribute to their communities, giving back a measure of what they have gotten.

The National Down Syndrome Congress has been an important part of all of that. You see, we are the families of individuals with Down syndrome. And, with sincere thanks, professionals – doctors, attorneys, therapists, teachers – who rallied to us. We are the people who believe in our kids, demand their rights and get them affirmed. We are the people who supported them in all they did from infancy to adulthood. And, we are also them – we are people with Down syndrome.

Along the way, many of us became experts. We had this odd notion that we knew our kids better than anybody. We understood their needs and believed in their abilities. So we demanded better health care, creativity in education, community support. We lobbied for laws assuring their civil rights, seized the attention of boards of education and human services departments. And, we worked together, forming the NDSC in 1973. We worked tirelessly over the years to foster a network of local and regional groups across the country to reach out and embrace thousands of people – people with Down syndrome, their families, friends and the professionals who support them.

Together we are a formidable force. We have the power to put new moms at ease, open doors to leadership for teens and secure a rewarding future for all people with Down syndrome.

While much of the pioneering is behind us, much remains to be done. We must defend what we have gained and open new doors of opportunity. In the meantime, NDSC is a community in the best sense of the word. We join together each summer at our national convention to celebrate the lives of people with Down syndrome. To learn and motivate. To recognize the achievements of all. And, to laugh and, sometimes, cry.

Together, the nation's 2,617 YMCAs are the largest not-for-profit community service organization in America, working to meet the health and human service needs of 20.2 million men, women and children in 10,000 communities in the United States. YMCAs are at the heart of community life across the country: 42 million families and 72 million households are located within three miles of a YMCA.

YMCA stands for Young Men's Christian Association, but don't misinterpret this to mean that YMCAs are only for "young, Christian men." From its start more than 150 years ago, when George Williams founded the YMCA as a substitute Bible study and prayer for life on the streets, the YMCA was unusual because it crossed the rigid lines that separated all the different churches and social classes in England in those days. This openness was a trait that would lead YMCAs to recognize their strength is in the people they bring together -- Ys are for all people of all faiths, races, ages, abilities and incomes. YMCAs' financial assistance policies ensure that no one is turned away for reasons of inability to pay.

The Word of God

The year was 1990. I was working as a freelance composer from time to time for Geof Benson Music at Swell Pictures in Chicago, in a high tech digital studio for commercial music production, complete with a Synclavier and New England Digital's "Tapeless Studio." At home in St. Louis I had Geof's old low tech analog studio and a few Korg synthesizers. My challenge was to approximate the sound we produced in Chicago, with state-of-the-art cutting edge technology, at home with considerably less than cutting edge technology. Don Quixote has nothing on me.
And then there was my desire to do something more spiritual than herbicide and beer commercials. I was in long term recovery from a high school and college fling with atheism. A surreal moment in Geof's studio might help to illuminate the essence of my dilemma:
There were five of us men, if I remember correctly, and one young woman, tweaking the soundtrack of a beer commercial. That means we watched it over and over for half an hour or more. Whenever the low cut top of one of the attractive actresses in the commercial revealed some excess cleavage, the young woman among us voyeurs approved with loud, sometimes lewd, at least rude, comments. The men in the studio would not have dared to act like that, not with a woman present. We were on a holy mission, the most holy. Our incomes, our careers, and our reputations were on the line. I don't really believe the young woman was an oversexed lesbian. I think she thought she was fitting into a man's world.
It got me thinking. What were we doing as we carefully placed every beat and sound heard in that beer spot? For all my protestations of innocence, what was I thinking when I helped place the little gasps and giggles in the soundtrack from that sample collection Geof had, the one euphemistically titled Exotic Woman Sounds?
Well, the result of these two lines of thought (and who knows how many more?) was The Word of God, a collection of scripture readings with musical accompaniment. Each passage from the Bible explores the Word of God from a slightly different perspective. My efforts to create a more spiritual music guided by the Scripture became what I call "an exercise in ethereal architecture." If you imagine a transparent three-dimensional structure moving through space and changing over time, you have a fair grasp of what I attempted to achieve.
