Building performance relies upon the day-to-day operation of a building and the competence of its building operators. Green and sustainable emphasis is placed on the design of building systems that may be very complex in nature and beyond the average skill level of the facility staffs. A need exists, however, to ensure that building operators are given the knowledge and skills required to operate green and sustainable buildings for their intended capabilities throughout the life of a building. To address sustainability on an ongoing basis, which requires the expertise of facility managers and operators, training needs should be integrated into the design and construction process.
Learning objectives:
- Develop specification language that details training methodologies, delivery, and evaluation
- Identify the current situation of hiring, developing, and retaining key facility personnel
- Construct a plan to develop a continuous facility staff development program to address maintaining sustainable design goals
